Google Maps in toujou

Generate and set-up your own API key

In June 2018, Google changed its Maps service and now Maps, Routes and Places are contained in the Google Cloud Platform. As part of this change, you now need an API key to display Google Maps.

In this blog post, we'll talk about how users can display addresses in toujou and which map elements are affected by the transition to the Google Cloud Platform. toujou’s theme tutorial on Analytics Settings also offers more information about the Google services that are included.

Use Google Maps as an external service

As a basic function, embedding maps into a website will continue to be free but it is important to note that Google maps itself is in fact a paid service.

The good news is that you are unlikely to face any costs. Each account is granted a free quota of $ 200 or 100,000 map requests (or 40,000 route plans) per month. Nevertheless, in the linked guide (below) you will be asked to provide credit card details. But again, you can set a control limit that prevents you from exceeding your free monthly quota.

Manual within toujou

Once you've created your API key, all you have to do within toujou is to follow these steps:

  • Go to the back end of your toujou installation.
  • Click the toujou Theme module and then on the tab Analytics.
  • Please enter your Google API key in the appropriate form.
  • Save the change.

Set up the API key

New and existing Google users please follow the steps linked here.

Should toujou users choose not to set up a Google API key, be sure to remove/hide any dynamic map elements in use on the website. Alternatively, toujou users can use the Map image element instead. The Map image element uses a static image file instead of a dynamic map and doesn’t require a Google API key.
